In 2008 the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS) celebrates 100 years of surveying, recording and collecting information and material on the archaeological, architectural and maritime heritage of the country. Capturing the physical evidence that survives of the human influence on the multi-layered landscapes and townscapes that we inherit today is the vital skilled task of RCAHMS. We are working to create a record of some of the finest cultural landscapes in the world, including Scotland’s earliest prehistoric monuments, abandoned rural settlements, industrial sites, historic buildings and urban centres.
From small beginnings, with a budget of £1,100 and a staff of two, today there are over 100 people working in RCAHMS.
This is our story.
