One hundred years on, RCAHMS is more active than ever with field survey work being undertaken throughout the country from St Kilda to the Scottish Borders. Treasured Places is the third major exhibition of the year. The Scran online learning resource, with its direct routes into both formal and informal education joined RCAHMS in April and in June the Aerial Reconnaissance Archives (TARA) were transferred, adding to the collection some 10 million prints and negatives from around the world.

Much has been achieved in the first 100 years: archaeological fieldwork has identified thousands of monuments and historic landscapes; aerial photography has revealed the buried remains of long-lost settlements and communities; historic buildings and industrial monuments have been analysed and recorded; a record of Scotland’s shipwrecks has been established; and an archive of some 14.5 million drawings, photographs, manuscripts and digital files has been assembled.

But much remains to be done…
