This recent photograph reveals the interior of the Victorian swimming pool at Warrender Baths in Edinburgh. Built on ground purchased from a local MP, Sir George Warrender, the baths were designed by the Edinburgh-based architect Robert Paterson (1825-1889) and opened in December 1887.
Municipal baths were one of many public institutions that evolved during the Victorian era as part of attempts to improve the lives of ordinary people. Such baths embodied notions of cleanliness and healthy living. The 25 yard pool, like many others of its time, is brightly lit by a glass ceiling, creating a light and airy atmosphere.
The Warrender baths were recently refurbished and continue to provide a recreation space for Edinburgh residents today.
