Watercolour on paper, c.1859
Peddie and Kinnear
RCAHMS: Peddie and Kinnear Collection purchased in 1999
This unsuccessful competition entry by the Edinburgh based architectural practice of Dick Peddie and McKay is for the design of a monument to commemorate Sir William Wallace, the thirteenth century Scottish national hero.
J T Rochead of Glasgow produced the winning design and the Monument was built between 1862 and 1869 thanks to a successful fund-raising effort for which donations poured in from expatriate Scots around the world.
