The present-day site of St Enoch’s Square in Glasgow was originally the location of a chapel dedicated to St Enoch, the mother of St Kentigern (St Mungo), the patron saint of the city. This chapel was demolished during the Reformation.
As Glasgow expanded during the eighteenth century, a large square was created at the site, again named after St Enoch. St Enoch’s Church was constructed at the centre of the new square, with its foundation stone laid on 12 April 1780. The church was rebuilt c.1825-27, with a design by the architect David Hamilton that retained the old spire. This delicately coloured measured drawing was prepared by John Jeffrey in May 1925, possibly while a student. St Enoch’s Church was demolished the following year.
Today, the site hosts the St Enoch Shopping Centre.
