The company was started by Thomas Tunnock in Uddingston in 1890 and has been going ever since. The factory is only a short distance from the first teashop, which was set up in 1924. The teashop served not only cakes and products from the bakery but also hot pies.

Tunnocks are best known for their distinctively packaged Tunnocks Teacakes, Caramel Wafers, Caramel Logs and Snowballs, all of which have acquired something of a cult status. These products were first introduced by Tunnocks in the 1950s and still make up their core lines.

The company continues to be owned and run by the Tunnock family. Employing 550 staff, its weekly output is 300 tons of chocolate wafers and biscuits. About 40 per cent of this is exported, mainly to Australia, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Japan.
