Coal mining commenced at Mauchline Colliery in 1925 under the ownership of Caprington and Auchlochan Collieries Ltd. Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd took it over in over in 1935 and owned it until Nationalisation in 1947. The colliery had two shafts, both 274 metres deep.
Bairds and Dalmellington Ltd used coal from its own mines to produce iron. It had a strong presence in Ayrshire because of the availability of both coal and iron ore, and at one time owned 20 pits.
Mauchline Colliery closed in 1966 and was abandoned in 1969.
