Keillour Castle and Gardens, Perth and Kinross

The earliest records of Keillour Castle go back to the thirteenth century. The castle burnt down in the seventeenth century and was rebuilt in 1877. The designed landscape and woodland, for which it is best known, was laid out in the nineteenth century.

The property was purchased by Major and Mrs Knox Finlay in 1938 who had been attracted by the established but neglected grounds and gardens. They set about developing these, and started by clearing the garden and proofing and fencing it against rabbit invasion. Their efforts were interrupted by the Second World War but they recommenced work as early as 1947. Having created a unique garden of botanical interest, Major and Mrs Knox Finlay both received Veitch Medals for their contributions to horticulture.

The gardens are not open to the public but this photograph from RCAHMS survey work provides a glimpse of the walled garden.
