Black and white photograph, c.1900
RCAHMS: Survey of Private Collections
The Glen was built by David Bryce for Sir Charles Tennant, owner of the chemical works of St Rollox, Glasgow in 1852. Sir Robert Lorimer added garden terraces and redesigned the walled garden in 1905.
Such a substantial garden required a large team of gardeners, who are photographed here with their gardening equipment around 1900. Often early photographs are not captioned and we are left wondering about the people, but this image was accompanied by some information. Mr MacIntyre is the Head Gardener (second from the right) and he was succeeded by Alexander Black from 1907-21 (third from the right) before he moved to hold the same position at Ancrum House until 1930.
