Dunblane Hydro, Perthshire

Ink, pencil and colour wash on paper, c.1875-76
RCAHMS: Dick Peddie and McKay Collection purchased in 1999

Hydropathics were usually set in landscaped grounds with recreational facilities for the patients and their families, as illustrated in this plan. This site plan shows the design of the extensive grounds and gardens at Dunblane, some of which still remain today.

The medicinal value of a spring was discovered in Dunblane and the Hydro was planned to capitalise on the popularity with the public. Two sets of baths, one for women and one for men, contained all the latest appliances for hydro-therapeutical purposes.
