Stable Offices, Culzean Castle, South Ayrshire

Culzean Castle is one of Robert Adam’s most dramatic creations, where he created a mock-castle perched on a clifftop by the Firth of Clyde for the Earl of Cassilis.  In addition to the main house, Adam designed the farm and stable block, as well as the viaduct by which the house is approached, and a ‘ruined’ arch.  The stables echo the castle style of the main house.

This drawing shows the south side of the stable yard with its entrance archway.  The building was not constructed exactly as it appears in this drawing.  The central tower was built without the cupola and with less castellation.  It also now incorporates a clock, which would have been vital to workers on the estate.
