River Clyde, Glasgow

Black and white photograph, 1950
RCAHMS: RAF National Survey (Air Photographs) collection

This oblique aerial photograph of the River Clyde was taken by the Royal Air Force as part of the post-war National Air Survey of the United Kingdom.

The view is looking east along the River Clyde,  with Fairfield’s Shipbuilding Yard in the foreground and the warehouses of Meadowside Quay.

Fairfields built many famous warshipsand its history was brought to a close in 1965 when the company was placed in receivership.  In 1999 the yard passed to BAE Systems and is now part of BAE Systems Naval Ships. In total the company built almost 700 ships.

The Meadowside Quay warehouses were recently demolished and the site is now occupied by housing, the name surviving as Meadowside Quay Square and Walk.
