In his architecture Mackintosh often converted structural and useful features into the most beautiful elements of his buildings.

These metal brackets are a perfect example. Attached to the stonework of the façade they arch up to support the structure of the window mullions. They are very functional acting as both spring braces for the mullions and platforms for the planks and ladders of window cleaners needed to keep the glass clear so that the pure northern light can flood into the drawing and painting studios.
