The interior of Glasgow School of Art illustrates Mackintosh’s ability to manipulate the users’ experience of space, creating responses which work with the purpose of the space. Here his attention to detail transforms even the most utilitarian staircase, used by the students every day, into a constantly enlivening experience as the robust materials, brickwork and plaster, are contrasted with the baronial ironwork grills, the pattern of simple square coloured tiles set in the wall and the zig zag profile of the stair treads.
