The settlement of Kilmory has changed considerably, as now only the Chapel of St Maelrubha in the middle distance survives. The township contains a wide variety of traditional buildings including cruck-framed houses and smaller buildings serving a range of agricultural needs. At the rear stands a more modern building of the type which replaced the traditional thatched roof dwellings. The man sits on a creel which suggests that crofting would be supplemented by fishing. The chapel was given a flat glazed roof in 1934 and houses an important collection of Early Christian and medieval stones.
Reverend J B Mackenzie was born on St Kilda, and was minister in Tarbert, Colonsay and Kenmore. He studied ecclesiastical remains and folk traditions in his parishes, and published in the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He compiled this album of photographs which was gifted to the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
