White House, Gullane, East Lothian

Watercolour on board, c.1933

RCAHMS: RIAS Collection

The White House is designed in the Cape Dutch architectural style, with its diagonally set wings embracing the sunshine, holiday atmosphere and sea breezes of the village of Gullane.

The architect, John Jerdan, hoped to convince his client to build the house through this presentation drawing, which endeavours to sell a lifestyle. It obviously worked, as the white-washed house, now called White Lodge, still stands in Erskine Road, Gullane.
