This is one of a series of survey drawings by Nicholas Jankowski, one of several Polish architects who prepared measured survey drawings of significant buildings in Scotland during the Second World War for the Scottish National Buildings Record (SNBR). Set up in 1941 to make an emergency record of Scotland’s historic architecture in case of damage by enemy action, the SNBR photographed buildings, collected existing survey material and prepared measured survey drawings.

Craigmillar Castle lies only three miles south-east of Edinburgh’s centre, and is one of the most complete medieval castles in Scotland.
