Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh

Survey by RCAHMS

This oblique aerial view shows Murrayfield Stadium in the west side of Edinburgh during reconstruction in 1993. The stadium is where Scotland’s Home International rugby matches are played.
When the rugby ground opened in 1925, it had with open terraces and a large grandstand on the west side. It remained virtually unaltered until the 1980s, when work started to improve spectator facilities. The first part of conversion to an all-seater stadium was completed in 1986 and it is this stage that is seen in the image.

The final phase was completed between 1992 and 1994 when the new west stand was added.  The stadium is now all seated and has a capacity of 67,500.
