Braemar holds an annual Highland Games Gathering on the first Saturday in September. Its origins are believed to date back to the eleventh century, when King Malcolm Canmore visited the town. The Braemar Highland Society was created around 1826 and the first modern-day games took place in 1832.
The Duke of Fife gifted 12 acres of Mar Estate to the Society in 1906. Known as the Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park, it remains the current home of the Braemar Gathering.
This aerial photograph provides a different view of the Gathering - the aeroplane was probably an unusual sight for those attending the games – all heads are looking upwards.
